August 16-22, 2020
Dennen Week is a special one week program for boys ages 10-15 at Camp O-AT-KA in Sebago, Maine. It is a week of regular camp, with normal camp activities. The Dennen Week Program is modeled on our founder’s original vision Camp O-AT-KA. The Reverend Ernest Dennen firmly believed that given the right opportunity, in the right environment, every boy would be able to raise his sights and aspirations to loftier goals. Dennen Week allows deserving boys the chance to experience the benefits of camp life, that may have otherwise missed such an opportunity.
Dennen Week Campers are recommended by their teachers, guidance counselors, and friends as exemplary and deserving of this honor through our application process. They possess exceptional abilities to work and play with their peers in a positive way, maintain respectful and rewarding relationships with adults, and have been identified as the present and future leaders of their communities. We strive to serve our local area, and over 90 percent of our campers are from the neighborhoods of Southern Maine.
The Dennen Week staff is made up of many of those who work at the traditional summer camp during the previous 7 weeks. Also many alumni come and volunteer their time, filling roles from cabin staff to the camp chef! Participating in Dennen Week is an annual tradition for many O-AT-KA alumni and part of how they give back to the community that had such a positive impact on their lives.
Meet the Directors:
Joshua Plati is the director of Dennen Week. Josh has been an elementary teacher for the last twenty years. He graduated with his Bachelor’s from Hamilton College and completed his Masters of Arts in Teaching from Simmons College. Additionally, Josh has his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies from University of Southern Maine. As a collegiate swimmer, one of his great passions is coaching swimming; as well as serving as a town soccer and baseball coach to his children’s teams. He currently teaches fourth grade in Falmouth, Maine. He resides in Windham, Maine with his wife Heather – who is the Executive Director at Camp O-AT-KA – and their two children.
Bill Southwick is the on-site director of Dennen Week. Since his first summer at camp at age 11, Bill has filled nearly every role at camp, from counselor and wilderness trip leader to unit head and assistant director, culminating with five summers as camp director. Bill spent 30 years as a teacher and administrator in independent schools before becoming an independent educational consultant in Boston, helping students and families navigate the school and college admission process. He and his wife Heather met at camp, and their three college-age children have been involved with O-AT-KA all their lives, most recently as Dennen Week staff. When he is not at camp, Bill can often be found on the trails and waterways of northern New England, hiking, canoeing, and enjoying the great outdoors.
